The United States said it is expecting a 'stable and democratic' outcome from the current political crisis in Kyrgyztan.

"The US is closely watching the events in Kyrgyzstan in the wake of the country's disputed elections and desires a process that will lead to a stable outcome in which new elections can be held," Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice said on Friday.

Rice observed that if the current upheaval leads to the election of a government and moves 'this process of democracy forward, it will have been a good thing'.

She said the US was supporting the efforts of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, a leading international group that helps the Kyrgyz people find their way to a democratic Kyrgyzstan.

"We have noted that there is a united, I believe, view in Europe, including the Russians, that the key is that everybody should forego violence and the only course is for political dialogue," she said.

The Central Asia nation of five million was the scene of disputed parliamentary elections in February. The current unrest stemmed from dissatisfaction with that election.

President Askar Akayev fled the capital after protesters stormed his headquarters, seized control of state television and overran government offices.

The Parliament in power before the elections was reconstituted and it elected former opposition lawmaker Ishenbai Kadyrbekov as the country's interim President on Friday.
