The Jammu and Kashmir police on Monday evening detained the police sub-inspector of a local police station in connection with the killing of four civilians in firing by security forces in Gool area of Ramban district last week, which had triggered widespread protests across the state.
Sub-inspector Afzal Wani was detained by the Special Investigation Team of the Jammu and Kashmir police for questioning following the filing of an FIR by the family of Manzoor Ahmad Shan, a secondary school lecturer who was one of the people killed in the firing.
As per the FIR, the family accused Wani of killing Shan intentionally to settle personal scores.
“Wani has been detained for questioning,” said Javed Mattoo, district police chief of Ramban.
Police sources also said that the eight-member SIT, headed by a deputy superintendent of police, has served notices to the local Border Security Force camp to provide the names of the BSF personnel who were part of an ambush party which allegedly roughed up the local Imam.
The SIT has also asked the BSF to present those men for questioning in the next two to three days.
The killing of the four villagers had triggered widespread anger and violent protests, during which scores of people including police and Central Reserve Police Force personnel were injured.
