Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief M Karunanidhi has said that all viewpoints have to be taken into account before starting any work on the disputed Kudankulam nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu.
Talking to mediapersons, Karunanidhi said that it would not be proper to start work at the nuclear power plant site without consulting all stakeholders.
"I don't have to say anything on this and I think everything should be discussed. All viewpoints would have to been taken into account," said Karunanidhi.
He also said that an all-party meet was necessary on the issue to reach a consensus.
"I have already mentioned that an all-party meeting must be convened to discuss the issue. But it was not done and instead an assembly session was called. By convening an all-party meeting, we get different views on the subject and that is what we have missed, I feel," added Karunanidhi.
His statement came in the wake of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's statement at Moscow that work on Unit 1 of the power plant would begin very soon with Russian assistance.
Established in joint collaboration between India and Russia, the Kudankulam nuclear power project envisages to build two 1,000 MW VVER type reactors by the end of December 2011.
In the wake of the Fukushima disaster in Japan, several nuclear projects across India, such as the one at Jaitapur in Maharashtra, have run into rough weather as protesting locals and activists argue that such plants could adversely affect the environment.
