Gunmen on motorcycles attacked a police station in the Pakistani port city of Karachi on Tuesday to free an inmate, killing a policeman and wounding two others, officials said.

A senior police official said that gunmen on motorcycles attacked the police station in Sohrab Goth after throwing a cracker to cause confusion. They opened fire in which one policeman was killed and two were wounded, the police official said.

"The policeman lost his live in the line of duty. Apparently they came to free a inmate jailed in the station," police spokesman Imran Shaukat told PTI. He said the outer wall of the station was damaged by the explosive cracker.

In other parts of the city violence and target killings continued taking the death toll to 32 since Saturday. The killings took place on the main Shaheed-e-Millat road, Korangi town and Manzoor colony.

Shaukat said armed assailants shot dead Muhammad Ghayas, secretary general of Bengali Action Committee, near Vita Chowrangi in KorangiTown.

In another incident gunmen opened fire on a vehicle on Shaheed-e-Millat road killing two people. Amid the spree of killings, the federal interior minister Rehman Malik caused a stir by telling reporters on Monday that February could be a bloody month in Karachi.
