Three policemen were injured when militants ambushed a police patrol in the south Kashmir's saffron-rich Pampore town on Tuesday evening.

A senior police officer said militants opened fire from their automatic weapons at a posse of police near Kadalbal Pampore, 14 kilometers from capital Srinagar injuring two policemen and a special police officer.

"The injured cops were evacuated to Soura medical institute for treatment. Condition of one of the cops identified as Farooq Ahmad who received bullet injury in his head is critical," the officer said.

Security forces immediately surrounded the area and searches were mounted.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the Tuesday evening attack.
