One Indian Army jawan was killed as security forces enageged in a fierce gunfight with terrorists in the forest area of north Kashmir's Kupwara district on Wednesday afternoon. The gunbattle is still on.

A senior police officer said troops of counterinsurgency 21 Rashtriya Rifles, 1 Para Regiment of the Indian army and the local police surrounded the forest area in Kremhore village near Rajwar after they got a tip-off that a group of four to five terrorists were hiding in the area.

"As the security forces were busy searching the area, they came under heavy gunfire from the hiding militants. The fire was returned, triggering a gunfight, which is still on," the officer said.

He said reinforcements have been rushed to Kremhore, where more forest area has been brought under cordon.

"Fire exchanges are on between the security forces and militants in the area," the officer said.
