A junior commissioned officer of the counter insurgency Rashtriya Rifles committed suicide in a camp in central Kashmir Budgam district by shooting himself with his automatic service rifle on Friday evening.

The incident came a day after five army soldiers were killed by a colleague inside an RR camp in north Kashmir Manasbal area of Ganderbal district before he killed himself.

One army trooper was injured in the incident.

Army has ordered a high level inquiry to investigate into the circumstances under which the unfortunate incident occurred, said a defence spokesperson.

“All the soldiers belonged to 13 Rashtriya Rifles, which to its credit has 125 awards which includes one Ashoka Chakara and two Kirti Chakaras. The unit has an excellent counter terrorism record as it has killed and apprehended a large number of terrorists,” the spokesman said in a statement.
