Four soldiers were killed on Tuesday night in an explosion in the motor transport section of Jalandhar cantonment.

The explosion took place at about 2115 hours. Some soldiers were working in the section when a battery meant for charging vehicles went off triggering a blaze, Naresh Vig, Public Relations Officer of the Army, said.

The identity of the deceased was yet to be ascertained, he said, adding that senior army officials had rushed to the spot and fire tenders had been pressed into service to control the fire.

Vig said investigation by experts was on to ascertain the cause of the blast.
