National Woman Bioscientist Awards: 2003

The Department of Biotechnology invites nominations from women scientists currently working in the areas of biology and biotechnology and have made outstanding contributions in research, product and technology development. 

Five copies of the nominations typewritten on plain paper as per the pro forma, two photographs with negatives and 12 copies of a summary of achievements as per the pro forma should be sent to Dr Suman Govil, Director, Department of Biotechnology, Block 2 (6–8th Floor), CGO Complex, Lodi Road, New Delhi 110003. A copy may also be sent by email to suman@dbt.nic.in

Last date for receipt of nominations: October 15, 2003.

The details of the scheme are as under:

1. Number of Awards: Three awards are given every year. There are two categories of awards: 

a. Senior Woman Bioscientist Award: There will be one award (Rs 100,000 along with citation and a gold medal) for a senior woman biologist for lifetime contributions. The nominee should have carried out excellent research and applied the results for the benefit of society.

b. Young Woman Bioscientist Awards: There will be two awards (Rs 50,000 each with citation and gold medal) for young women scientists below the age of 45 years for pursuing a brilliant research career in biology. Contributions made in the last five years would be the main consideration.

2. Eligibility: The Nominee should be a citizen of India and actively involved in research and teaching activities in biology and biotechnology in the country. For the senior category, there is no age limit. For the two young woman bioscientist awards, the candidates should be below 45 years of age as on December of the preceding year. 

3. Nominations: Women scientists working in the area of biology/biotechnology can be nominated by members of the SAC-DBT; SAC(O), DBT; Vice-Chancellors of Universities/Deemed Universities; Chairman, UGC; DGs of CSIR, ICAR, ICMR, DRDO; Directors of National Research Laboratories, etc.; Presidents of approved scientific societies and academies of All India Nature; Secretaries of S&T Departments/Ministries such as DST, DBT, DSIR, DOD, MNES, MOEF, Atomic Energy, Space, Commerce, Industry and Health & Family Welfare and Human Resource Development; and Member (Science) Planning Commission.

Nomination from individuals sponsoring their own names will not be considered.

4. Mode of selection: The selection of candidates for the award will be made on the basis of recommendations of an expert committee constituted specifically for the purpose by the Department of Biotechnology. Only nominations complete in all respects as per pro forma will be considered. The decision of the selection committee will be final. The selected candidates will be informed.

5. Presentation of the award: The awardees will receive the awards at a formal function organized by the DBT, usually on International Women's Day.

a. List of publications in indexed journals (exclude presentations made in conferences/seminars, etc.; attach copies of not more than five most significant publications during the last five years)

b. List of patents taken/applied for

c. Details of technologies developed and transferred, if any, including name of the industry to which transferred and technology fee obtained

d. List of books/reviews written

e. Citation index of published work

9. Overseas visits (indicate the duration of the visit with dates, name of the institute/laboratory and country, purpose etc.)

10. Memberships of academies/societies/professional bodies

11. Awards received (give full particulars such as the awarding agency/organisation, nature of award)

12. Significant research contributions (not exceeding 5 pages) made in the area of biology/biotechnology during her lifetime (for nominees in the category of senior woman scientist) and during the past five years (for nominees in the category of young woman scientist) for which the nominee is recommended for the National Woman Bioscientist Award of DBT

13. Any other information in support of the nomination
