Indian documentary filmmaker Vijay Kumar, who left the US after weeks of detention, was detained and questioned in Canada, his friend said on Thursday, but Indian authorities were not yet aware of the development.

Kumar flew to Vancouver from Houston, where he was sentenced to 20 days in prison after being arrested for carrying brass knuckles and jihadi literature.

The filmmaker was detained again in Vancouver, Kumar's friend was quoted as saying by channel Times Now.

"He is staying in a hotel, and initially people were ready to deport him to India, to which he did not agree. Let's see what happens next," his friend Diksha said.

"As of now that is not certain (when he is going to come back) because he will have to face proceedings in Vancouver," she added.

However, Indian authorities said they had no information yet of such a development in Canada.

"I spoke to our mission (in Canada) and they are not aware if any such development. We are trying to get details about the reports. We have not got anything from the Canadian authorities also," Overseas Affairs Minister Vyalar Ravi told PTI here.
The channel said Kumar's passport was also impounded and he would appear for a hearing with the Canadian Border Services Agency.
