The police killed a former People's Liberation Army militant and arrested 10 others, belonging to different insurgent organisations, since Tuesday.
Police commandos belonging to Imphal West district launched an operation in the Naoremthong area, near Imphal, following reports of presence of some militants there.
An exchange of fire took place in which a former militant of the PLA, identified as Laishram Nilakomol alias Nikol, 37, was killed on Tuesday, police sources said.
A 9mm pistol, two China-made hand-grenades and seven rounds of ammunition were recovered after the exchange. Family and local sources said Nilakomol was a former
member of the PLA, but he had retired from the party some two years ago on medical ground and was in judicial custody for about a year.
After release from the judicial custody, he was having a normal life with his wife and two children, the sources said. Ten other militants, including those of Kangleipak Communist Party and People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak, were arrested from different parts of Imphal East and Imphal West districts on charges of extortion of money, police sources said.
