Indian Mujahideen's bomb-maker Abdul Subhan’s is a case which would make authorities think twice about releasing deadly terrorists on the basis of good nature. Arrested in 2000 for supplying RDX and AK-47 rifles, he was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by a court. However, because of his good conduct in jail he was released in 2010.
According to an intelligence source, he turned even more dangerous once he was out of jail. From an arms supplier for the Inter-Services Intelligence, he turned into a full-fledged motivator and recruiter for the Lashkar-e-Tayiba. Subhan, who was arrested on July 20, told the Delhi police that he had only made a show of a change of heart to get out of jail.
Delhi police sources told rediff.com that Subhan was tasked with a specific job in Mewat in Rajasthan. “I was told to identify motivated religious youths to join the LeT. The job was to recruit youth for an operation in Delhi, where we decided to carry out a series of attacks,” Subhan told the Delhi police.
The Delhi police source added that Subhan was also tasked with raising money for a major attack in Delhi. As per his interrogation, he has said that he had narrowed down on a businessman from New Delhi, who he had planned on abducting for a ransom. He said that the LeT prefers if the operatives raise money by themselves for terror strikes.
“The Lashkar wants to ensure that there is no money trail from Pakistan left during major attacks. So we decided to abduct a businessman and use the ransom money for the attack,” Subhan told his interrogators.
He reported to Jawed Baluchi, an operative in Karachi, which the intelligence agencies found out when they intercepted Subhan’s calls. During these intercepts, they learnt that he had planned a major attack on Delhi for August 4.
Subhan began his journey into the world of terror along with Aftab Ansari, a Kolkata-based operative who was later arrested for his role in the American consulate attack. He was arrested when he was moving a huge consignment of arms and ammunition into Gujarat.
He told his interrogators that his new mission did not involve any particular target, but added that they wanted to send a strong message to the government by carrying out blasts in the capital. According to the Delhi police, Subhan was a good talker, which helped him with the recruitments. Moreover, this was the same nature which helped him win over the jail staff during his stint in jail. The Delhi police say that he is charismatic and he managed to win over several youth and recruited them into the Lashkar.
