Hitler, Frankenstein among candidates in Meghalaya polls

A range of amusing names of poll candidates in the fray in Meghalaya assembly election is bound to make the name panel in the Electronic Voting Machines sound interesting in many constituencies on February 23.

There is an Adlof Hitler, a Frankenstein, one Adamkid and Kismat Sangma many others with entertaining names in the list of the total 345 candidates in the fray in the Assembly election in the picturesque hill state.

Adlof Hitler Marak, a senior politician of the Congress is contesting from Bajengdoba LAC while another senior Congress leader Frankestein Momin is contesting from Mendipathar LAC.

For instance, the United Democratic Party’s first-time candidate with a peculiar name Wonderlyne Lapang is contesting the election from the Jirang LAC, while another newcomer and an Independent candidate, Adamkid Sangma is contesting from north Tura in Garo Hills areas, while Billikid Sangma of the Congress is contesting from south Tura LAC.

An independent candidate from North Tura LAC, Kismet Sangma banks on his ‘kismat (luck) to win the polls.

In Pynthorumkhrah LAC, the first-time candidate Predecessor Rumnong of the United Democratic Party, is pitted against Process Sawkmie, as Independent candidate among others.

Bombersingh Hynniewta of the Hill State People’s Democratic Party contesting from the Mylliem LAC hopes to win it smoothly as he has remained the party’s candidate from that constituency for a long time.

Independent candidate Hilarious Dkhar from Nartiang and Hilarious Pohchen  Nongkrem) also an independent, are not related unlike the brothers Founder Cajee, an Independent candidate and Sounder Cajee of the Congress, contesting from Mawlai and Shillong South constituencies respectively.

Romeo Phira Rani, who is contesting from East Shillong on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket catches attention of the voters because of the first name. This time, Zenith is contesting from Ragsakona constituency in place of Marak, who has been shifted to Bajengdoba.

Results from the past elections showed that Hitler, a former minister from the Nationalist Congress Party , had lost to Zenith in the 2003 assembly elections, but Hitler defeated Zenith in 2008.

While the UDP has fielded Mawphniang to contest from Umsning LAC where there are many heavy weights, Highlander Kharmalki also from the UDP chose to contest from Mawryngkneng.

Moonlight Pariat from Jowai and Finelynes Bareh from Khliehriat are independent candidates. While Hopingstone Lyngdoh of the United Democratic Party takes on Adviser Pariong of the Congress at Nongstoin, the former fielded his party man Hopingstone Masharing to contest from Mawhati in Ri Bhoi.

Hopeful Bamon, an independent candidate is campaigning aggressively in Sutnga-Saipung in East Jaintia Hills with a hope to win of course.

Basawimoit (Nongkrem) has shown ardent desire to defeat his opponents, Fairly Bert Kharrngi of the BJP. The Mawshynrut constituency, which has the maximum number of candidates has candidates such as Methodius Dkhar of the Congress, Witting Mawsor of the HSPDP and independents, Anvil Lyngdoh and Livingstone Marak.

The Congress has no dearth of bold and special names as they have also fielded candidates such as Boldness Nongum to contest from Mawthadraishan seat of West Khasi Hills. In Garo Hills, while Pillarson G Momin of the BJP is contesting from Raksamgre, Secondson Sangma is an Independent candidate from Baghmara.

In Salmanpara constituency of South West Garo Hills, Winnerson D Sangma of the Congress are fighting against Independent Rightious Sangma and the National People’s Party’s Boston Marak.

The Congress candidate from Raliang constituency in West Jaintia Hills, Coming one Ymbon, from Raliang constituency hopes to come back to the assembly once again subject to how the voters responded to his call on February 23 polling day.
