A Dalit girl was gang-raped in Haryana's Kaithal district on Tuesday night. According to reports, the 19-year-old girl was kidnapped and gang-raped by two men in Kalayat area of Kaithal district.

Acting on a complaint by the girl, two boys have been arrested on charges of rape.

However, the Haryana police have denied reports about the girl being gang-raped.

Senior Superintendent of Police (Kaitha) Kuldeep Singh claimed that investigations have revealed some conflicting information.

"After going through mobile records, we found that the girl had called both the boys. (The accused) Rakesh owns a mobile phone repair shop while Pawan works in a factory in Dehrabassi, near Chandigarh," Singh said.

"We are investigating the allegations of gang-rape by the girl and our findings will be placed before the court," he added.

The untoward incident took place hours after Congress president Sonia Gandhi's Haryana visit, where she met the family of a Dalit teenaged girl, who had immolated herself after being gang-raped.

Gandhi had rejected the suggestion of a Haryana Khap Panchayat -- that marriageable age for girls should be reduced to 16 as this will help in curbing the increasing instances of rapes in the state.

"The country has a democratic system and an independent judiciary and the law is in the hands of the judiciary and nobody else," she said.

The Congress government in Haryana has drawn flak from all quarters for its alleged failure to prevent incidents of crime against Dalits and women.

Fourteen rape cases have been reported from the state in the last one month.
