The Gujarat police on Monday claimed that noted danseuse Mallika Sarabhai had used her Darpana Academy of Performing Arts to send three girls to the United States in the year 2001.

In an affidavit filed in Ahmedabad, investigating officer, P N Kher, urged rejection of her application for modifications in the anticipatory bail conditions to allow her to leave Gujarat saying she is 'not co-operating' in the ongoing probe.

"An inquiry conducted by charity commissioner into the academy show that prima facie there are serious financial irregularities by the academy," Kher said.

The probe revealed that Sarabhai had issued legal notices to the three girls after they failed to return to India and obtained Rs 7.5 lakh from the family of one the girls, identified as Joyce Chovalia, while a case was filed at the
chief metropolitan court against another girl.

"Considering all these aspects, prima facie it looks like Sarabhai had illegally taken these three girls abroad, under the banner of Darpana and conspired in facilitating their permanent stay there," Kher said in the affidavit.

Police has also alleged that the danseuse helped prepare fake documents showing that the trio was part of Darpana's cultural troupe with one girl, who was pregnant, being declared as a dancer.
