The United Progressive Alliance government, the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Congress now finally appear to be on the same page with both the government and the agency making it clear to the apex court that there is no case against Chidambaram and that the SC need no longer monitor the 2G case, as was happening till now.
The ground for this was prepared in the meeting held on Monday night between Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Law Minister Salman Khurshid and V Narayanswamy.
Both Khursheed and Naraynswamy were instructed by Mukherjee on how the case has to be handled in the court.
Which they did.
The Congress has also taken the same line of defence as the government, making it clear that Chidambaram has done nothing wrong and that there is no question of him resigning.
While the government has asked the apex court to throw Subramaniam Swamy's application in the dustbin, sources say that the ball is now totally in the court's hands, with the government nowhere in the picture on the issue.
Sources say that with Pranab Mukherjee set to return by Wednesday afternoon from West Bengal, he is likely to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday itself, by which time the Supreme Court may clarify its position on the application moved by Subramaniam Swamy.
