On the heels of a fake Facebook account in the name of Education Minister Atanasio Monserrate, came a fake profile of Chief Minister Digambar Kamat.
Dr Herald D'Costa, director, Intelligent Quotient Security System, Pune, told the The Navhind Times that Kamat asked him to write to the Indian computer emergency response team (CERT-In), department of information technology, ministry of communications and information technology asking them to block Orkut, Facebook and other social networking sites.
He added that incidents of bogus accounts and e-mails were on the rise.
According to the newspaper, the letter claimed that social networking sites had been disturbing the lives of people in Goa with unscrupulous elements using them to post defamatory and obscene materials to blackmail, cause mayhem and destroy the social fabric of the state.
'Innocent people fall victim to emails or "add friend" requests when it seems those e-mail IDs belong to their friends or people known to them. They then have a rude awakening when they find out that they are now part of 'friend list' of obscene groups,' the letter reportedly stated. 'The fallout of such sites and the misuse by unscrupulous elements is defamation to peoples' characters, marital break ups, disharmony among families and even suicides.'
