A 23-year-old paramedical student from Uttarakand, who was travelling in a bus with her male friend, was allegedly gang-raped inside the vehicle and then thrown out of it, the police said on Monday.

The male friend, who is an engineer and currently working in a firm, was also attacked and thrown off the bus near Mahipalpur in south Delhi late Sunday night.

The girl was allegedly gang-raped in the bus and her friend brutally assaulted when they were going to Dwarka from Munirka last night. They were then thrown out of the bus near Mahipalpur flyover, the police said.

After they raised an alarm, both were taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre from where the girl was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital. Her condition is stated to be critical.

A case has been registered at the Vasant Vihar police station.

The girl, who studies in a college in Dehradun, is in the capital for her internship.

Reacting to the incident, National Commission for Women chairperson Mamata Sharma said, "Such incidents are increasing in Delhi. The police and government should be really alert... We will get an inquiry done and will also enquire with police as to what action has been taken so far."

ANI adds: The victim, along her male friend, had boarded a whiteline private bus at around 11 pm from Munirka in south Delhi to go to Palam, where she lives.

The male friend was beaten up badly by people on the bus after he objected to their harassment of the victim.

"They took out a rod and beat him badly and then dragged her to the bus cabin where they raped her," the victim's friend's uncle said.

Her friend, who worked in a software firm, was escorting her home after watching a film at the Select City Walk mall in Saket.

The police said it was not clear whether the five assailants were passengers or bus staff.

No arrests have been made so far; the police have seized two buses.

The victim's friend registered a complaint with the Vasant Vihar police station at around 1.15 am.

A first information report has been lodged at the Vasant Vihar police station. The cops have seized two buses, however, no arrests have been made so far.
