All-Party Hurriyat Conference leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani was on Wednesday airlifted to Mumbai for treatment at the Tata Memorial Hospital, official sources said.

Geelani, arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and brought to the Birsa Central Jail in Ranchi on June 9, 2002, is suffering from suspected malignancy of kidney.

Recently he had undergone various medical tests at the Apollo Hospital in Ranchi.

The Tata Memorial Hospital was one of the three hospitals recommended by the medical board constituted by the Jharkhand government to shift Geelani for specialised treatment.

Home Secretary J B Tubid on Tuesday said that the Jammu and Kashmir government had requested Jharkhand to shift the former Hurriyat chairman to Mumbai.
