An RTI query on gang rapes reveals shocking details.

From January 2009 to May 31, 2014, Mumbai has witnessed 59 gang rapes -- an average of 10 a year, an RTI query filed with the Mumbai Crime Branch by a Mumbai activist has revealed.

The age of victims who were raped ranges between 3 and 55 years.

Equally shocking is the fact that half of these gang rape victims happen to be minors (31), with three of them in the age group of 3 and 8 years.

Despite the rising anger and awareness about such incidents in the aftermath of the December 2012 Delhi gang rape case and the subsequent efforts by the city police to contain rapes, gang rapes in Mumbai jumped from 8 in 2012 to 18 in the calendar year 2013 -- a jump of more than 100 per cent.

In fact, 2013 has been the year when Mumbai, which politicians have grand plans to convert into a city like Shanghai, recorded the highest number of gang rape cases in the last five years beginning January 2009.

From January to May 31, 2014, the city has registered seven gang rape cases.

The information provided by RTI activist Chetan Kothari gives a detailed break-up of the gang rapes based on the age of the victims and the police jurisdiction under which these incidents took place.

According to this data, the tony north-western suburb of Bandra in Mumbai  saw three incidents of gang rapes registered -- two cases 2010, in which the age of victims was 16 and 8, and one in 2013 in which the age of the victim was 21.

Kurar Village in Malad East, a north Mumbai suburb, also registered three cases -- one in 2011, with the age of victim being 22, and two in 2013, in which the age of victims was 17 and 13.
