A four-year-old girl was on Monday thrown out from a moving long-distance train by a passenger in Mumbai following a heated argument with the child's family members over a seat in a general bogie, the railway police said.
The girl, Sadhna Jamdade, sustained grievous injuries on the head and hands and was rushed to the municipality-run Sion hospital. Her condition was said to be critical, the police said.
The accused, Chotu Sharma (20), a resident of suburban Kandivli, was arrested by the Government Railway Police on charges of attempt to murder after the train reached Kalyan railway station.
According to the GRP, the victim's father, Samir Jamdade, along with family members and relatives arrived in Mumbai on Monday to pay tribute to Dr B R Ambedkar on his 54th death anniversary at Chaityabhoomi in Shivaji Park, Dadar. "This morning the Jamdade family left for their residence in Kalyan in neighbouring Thane district and boarded the Mumbai-Bhusawal train from Dadar railway station at 05.30 hrs," said Ashok Deshbhratar, deputy police commissioner, GRP.
The Jamdade family had an argument with Sharma over a seat in the general bogie. After a while, a furious Sharma dragged the girl from the hands of Samir and ran towards the door, the DCP said adding and he threw the toddler near Vidyavihar railway station.
Sadhna's uncle Sunil pulled the train's chain following which the train stopped and the girl was found unconscious on the tracks, the DCP said.
The victim was immediately rushed to nearby Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar and later shifted to Sion hospital, he said.
Co-passengers thrashed Sharma and the youth was handed over to the GRP when train reached Kalyan station. It was not yet clear where Sharma had boarded the train and the purpose of his travel, the officer said.
