2 security personnel die in deadly gunbattle in Kashmir

An army trooper and a special police officer were killed while one army jawan and a civilian were injured in a fierce gunfight near the north Kashmir Tangmarg health resort in Baramulla district on Thursday morning.

A senior police officer said the encounter erupted after troops of counter insurgency – Rashtriya Rifles and Special Operations Group – acting on a tip-off surrounded a house in Hardeshoora village, 30 kilometre from Srinagar, in which two-three militants were hiding.

“The encounter is on. An army trooper and an SPO were killed and one army jawan and a civilian were injured,” the officer said.

He said the condition of the army trooper who was shifted to army base hospital in Srinagar is critical.

The injured civilian was also shifted to hospital, sources said.

More reinforcements have been rushed to the spot.
