Welcoming Supreme Court's directives to initiate steps to curb ragging, Rajendra Kachroo, who lost his son Amann in a ragging incident, on Friday said there has to be "independent monitoring mechanism" to ensure proper implementation of the order.

"We are welcoming every kind of intervention by the Supreme Court. But the most important point is whether these orders are being implemented or not," Kachroo told PTI.

His son Amann, a first year MBBS student of a medical college from Himachal Pradesh died following a ragging session last month.

The Supreme Court on Friday directed all state governments to constitute committees to look into ragging incidents, take measures for de-addiction

in cases of alcoholism and also ask colleges to appoint psychiatrists to provide counselling to the students.

"It is a great judgment. But we have to ensure proper implementation of these judgements. You can have hundreds of such judgements. Unless you ensure implementation, it is meaningless," Kachroo said.

The apex court also sought accountability from state governments by asking them to give an undertaking to the court about steps taken by them in accordance with its directions to prevent ragging in educational institutions.
