A vegetable seller was killed on the spot and two bystanders wounded in a powerful hand-grenade explosion that rocked the Dalgate area of Srinagar on Friday evening.

Dalgate locality in the uptown Srinagar is usually thronged by tourists and pilgrims who are flocking the Valley in thousands these days.

Police said militants tried to target a passing tourist bus at Dalgate on Friday evening, when the grenade hurled by them missed the target, and exploded on the road, killing one local identified as Abdul Salam Sheikh, a vegetable vendor and wounding two others.

"The injured were evacuated to SMHS hospital for treatment," said a police officer.

The explosion triggered tension and panic in the Dalgate locality. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the blast.
