Encounter on in Sopore; four policemen hurt

Four policemen have been injured in a fierce gun battle that broke out between security forces and militants in Sopore town of north Kashmir on Tuesday. 

The police said it launched an anti-militancy operation in Chanakhan area of Sopore, 55 km from Srinagar, with army’s assistance following information about the presence of militants in the area.

As the security forces were closing on a house where the militants were hiding, the ultras opened indiscriminate firing on them, a police official said.

Three police personnel were injured in the militant firing, the official said, adding the area has been cordoned off and additional security forces have been rushed to prevent the militants from escaping.

The exchange of firing between the two sides was on, the official said.
