Eight fishermen of nearby coastal Vedaranyam village were injured when they were allegedly attacked by Sri Lankan naval personnel in mid-sea off Arukattuthurai in Tamil Nadu on Sunday morning, officials said.

Officials, quoting the fishermen who returned ashore, said Lankan naval personnel surrounded their boats and ordered them to turn back. Some of the personnel jumped into their boats, attacked them and later damaged their fishing nets.

The injured fishermen have been admitted to the government hospital in Nagapattinam, where fisheries Minister K A Jayapal and District Collector T Munusamy visited them,

The minister directed the authorities to conduct an enquiry and submit a report to the government.
