Dowry Harassment Case Filed After Woman's Miscarriage

A case of dowry harassment has been registered in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, after a woman allegedly suffered a miscarriage due to assault and intimidation by her husband and in-laws over unmet dowry demands.

Police here have registered a case against four members of a family, including the victim's husband and his parents, over allegations of dowry harassment, assault and criminal intimidation after the victim allegedly suffered a miscarriage, officials said on Thursday.

According to police, the accused allegedly demanded Rs 2 lakh cash and a motorcycle as dowry, and warned the woman that she would not be allowed to have a child until she fulfilled the demands.

 

Dowry Demands and Harassment Allegations

Superintendent of Police Abhinav Tyagi said a case has been registered at Chauri police station against Ram Asare Bind, his father Raj Kumar, brother Nagendra and sister-in-law Sundari Devi on the complaint of Aarti Devi (27).

According to the FIR, soon after the marriage, she was allegedly harassed by her husband and in-laws for more dowry. The complainant alleged that the family repeatedly pressured her not to conceive until their demands were met.

Assault and Miscarriage

After Aarti became pregnant, the accused allegedly tried several times to terminate the pregnancy, the police said. Aarti alleged that when she refused to take the medicines, she was severely assaulted by her husband and other family members in March 2026, after which her condition deteriorated, they said.

She was rushed to a hospital in Varanasi, where doctors informed her that she had suffered a miscarriage, they added.

Threats and Police Intervention

The woman was later sent back to her parental home, and was allegedly threatened by her husband that if she returned without the cash and motorcycle, she would be killed with acid and her body disposed of, the SP said.

Aarti's younger sister, Pooja Bind, approached the police with a complaint, after which the accused allegedly began threatening her over phone calls as well, the police said.
