Expressing his concern over "objectionable content" on social networking sites, Union Telcom Minister Kapil Sibal on Tuesday asked internet firms to evolve a mechanism on their own to ensure that such content is removed.
The move is being deplored by many as an effort by the government to tighten its hold on online content, which so far has been beyond the purview of the forces of censorship, and chat forums and message boards are already full of fulminations against Sibal's views.
Is the government overstepping its role and crossing the fine line between keeping a check on controversial content and clamping down on freedom of speech/expression?
