The wife of slain soldier Saheed Hemraj, Dhramvati, has been forced to move out of their house following a tiff with her in-laws. Dhramvati has shifted to her own house in Chatta of Mathura district in Uttar Pradesh.
Hemraj and another jawan of the Rajputana rifles were killed by Pakistan army in January when they were on patrol in J&K’s Jammu sector causing a huge furore in India.
The chief of army staff visited Shernagar in Uttar Pradesh on January 16 to condole the death of Hemraj. His widow was handed over money as compensation, which her in-laws forced her to part with.
A police complaint by Dhramvati’s brother led to a senior superintendent personally visiting the village. Dhramvati was handed over the entire money in the presence of the village panchayat.
Dhramvati decided to move into the house built by her husband. A journalist, Sitaram Tiwari, who lives in the same village, said the dispute was amicably settled by both sides.
"Details of the settlement have not been revealed by both the parties and is being kept as a closely guarded family secret," he said.
This is not the first time that the widows of war victims have been harassed by their in-laws. Since this was a high-profile case prompt action was taken to secure the future of surviving members of Hemraj's family.
