Echoing Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh's statement, Congress on Saturday said the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is its partner as of now but significantly added it was difficult to say what would happen in future.
"It is very difficult to say what will happen in future. But as of now, we are in alliance with DMK," party spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed told mediapersons in New Delhi.
He was replying to a question as to whether Congress would rule out any alliance with All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in future in the wake of Jayalaltiha's offer of support to the United Progressive Alliance government if it removes Telecom Minister A Raja.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had on Friday said it was for the Congress high command to "take note" of the offer of support made by AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa in return for the sacking of Telecom Minister A Raja but added "as of now" the alliance with DMK stands.
"This is a subject I am hearing for the first time. It is for the Congress high command to take note of it. I don't know what Dr Jayalalithaa has offered. We are in alliance with DMK and that alliance stands as of now", Singh told reporters accompanying him on his return from Seoul where he attended the G-20 Summit.
To a question on whether Raja should resign taking cue from the resignations of Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, who had to quit following the Adarsh Housing controversy, the Congress spokesperson said," as far the question whether Raja should resign or not, it is for the Prime Minister or DMK to take a call."
Congress leaders are saying in private that the earlier Raja goes the better. "If he had been a Congress minister, he would have gone out a long back," was the refrain of a senior party leader when asked why there is delay in action against Raja particularly when Congress ministers had to go immediately after corruption charges surfacing against them.
Ahmed dubbed reports of CAG's criticism of Raja over 2G spectrum as a "leak" and said nothing can be said before the report is tabled in Parliament.
He said the CAG report has yet not been tabled and the case against Raja is subjudice.
"When the report is laid in the House, the government should follow the constitutional process," he added.
The opposition campaign for the removal of Telecom Minister A Raja is expected to gain further momentum next week with the CAG report on the 2G Spectrum allocation set to be tabled in Parliament in the next few days.
Highly-placed government sources said that the report has been sent to the President by the finance ministry and in the next three-four days it will be tabled in Parliament.
