The Uttar Pradesh police late on Thursday arrested Vidya Dalal, mother of bridegroom Munish, in connection with the dowry case in Noida.

Munish's aunt Savitri is still absconding, Noida Sector 24 Station House Officer, D K Sharma, said.

Nisha Sharma, a 21-year-old software engineering student, called the police when Munish and his parents allegedly demanded a car and Rs 1.2 million in cash at the time of her wedding on Sunday night.

Before the police arrived, the bridegroom's party had already left, but after assaulting Nisha's father.

He had already spent about Rs 150,000 buying two sets each of refrigerators, air conditioners, microwave ovens, home theatre systems, televisions and other appliances. One set was for Munish and the other was for his elder brother.

The police later arrested Munish, a computer teacher in a government school, from his Vikaspuri residence.

Meanwhile, Nisha admitted that she is still attracted to her classmate Navneet Rai, who is prepared to marry her.

"Rai was my classmate and we worked together on several projects at the Institute of Telecommunication and Engineering," she said.

But Nisha refused when Navneet's parents allegedly demanded that he be allowed to stay with the girl's family after marriage.
