One person has died after the police opened fire in the air to control a mob in New Delhi's Mayur Vihar on Sunday night. A mob set afire a police booth and a bus and clashed with police in an East Delhi locality on Sunday night after a rumour spread that a "drunk" man died after falling from his two-wheeler during a vehicle checking.

The incident was reported from Mayur Vihar Phase-III around 8 pm. Some persons were injured as police used force to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control.

Police said a scooter rider, who was under the influence of alcohol, fell off from the scooter when he was asked to stop at a police checking post in the locality. The rider sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital where he is being treated.

However, a rumour spread in the locality that the injured person died in the incident. Enraged locals marched towards the local police post which is in the jurisdiction of New Ashok Nagar police station and clashed with police. They also torched a police booth and a bus.

Police used force to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control.

A top Delhi police official said that a rumour triggered the violence and the situation was brought under control soon and adequate police personnel were deployed in the locality.
