The Delhi government on announced financial aid of Rs 15 lakh and a job to the family of the 23-year-old gangrape victim who died two days ago. The decisions were taken at a Cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

Keeping in view the extreme exceptional circumstances and barbaric nature of the crime, the Cabinet decided to sanction an amount of 15 lakh to the surviving members of the victim.

The decision has been taken by effecting relaxation in rules," a statement issued by the chief minister's office said.

The Cabinet also decided to offer a government job to one member of the family. It also observed a two-minute silence in memory of the victim. The phsyiotherapy student was brutally gangraped and assaulted in a moving bus in south Delhi on December 16. She breathed her last in a Singapore hospital on Saturday morning, three days after she was flown there by an air ambulance.

Her mortal remains were cremated in New Delhi on Sunday. The brutal assault on the girl has evoked widespread protests and demonstrations across the country and candlelight vigils have been held in Delhi and many cities across India demanding justice for the victim.

Officials said the Cabinet also discussed the issue of the growing sense of insecurity in the city following the incident and decided to implement a number of measures like installation of GPS devices in autos and buses as soon as possible.

The Cabinet also deliberated on the broad contours of the publicity campaign to be launched by the government as part of gender sensitisation programme.
