One paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force trooper was killed and another wounded in a militant attack in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Monday evening.

A senior police officer said militants fired at the escort party of ruling National Conference MLC Showkat Ahmad Ganai at village Awneera in Shopian district on Monday evening.

Ganai had arrived in the village sometime back and was inside a house when the militants opened fire at his escort party.

“The MLC was in a house well away from the place of incident,” a police spokesperson said in a statement.

Earlier in the day militants fired at a party of the special operations group of the Jammu and Kashmir Police killing one cop on the spot and wounding a civilian.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for either of the attacks.
