A reputed doctor and his wife are the latest victims of kidnapping in Bihar’s Gaya district. During the last two-and-a-half months, more than two dozen cases of kidnapping have been reported from across the state.

According to Bihar police, Dr Pankaj Gupta along with his wife Subha was abducted near Barachatti on the Grand Trunk Road in Gaya on Friday evening while they were turning home from a relative’s wedding in neighbouring Jharkhand's Gridih district.

Cops believe that Gupta along with his wife were abducted at gun point and were forcibly taken away in a new black Audi, which was driven by the doctor himself.

Police have begun investigations into the case and raided some places to trace the abducted doctor. They suspect he was abducted for ransom, but the family is yet to receive a ransom call, a police official said.

“Apparently, it seems to be a case of kidnapping for ransom,” Gaya Superintendent of police P Kanan said, adding, a special team of police officials had been formed to recover the doctor and his wife soon.

Meanwhile, the Bihar unit of the Indian Medical Association has demanded the state government to rescue the abducted doctor within next 24 hours. The association has threatened to launch a protest if the doctor and wife are not rescued by Monday evening.

“The IMA would be forced to launch agitation from Monday if Dr Gupta and his wife are not found soon.We have already given an ultimatum to the state government to safely recover them,” IMA state president Dr Sahjanand Singh said.

Doctors in Gaya also protested the police’s lack of action and wore black bands on Sunday.

Gupta is a well-known medical practitioner in Gaya and belongs to a leading business family in town.
