Badaun gangrape: One constable held, sent to judicial custody

One of the two constables on the run after allegedly raping a minor inside a police station premises in Badaun was arrested in Bareilly on Tuesday when he was about to board a Delhi-bound train and subsequently sent to judicial custody for 14 days.

Constable Avnish Yadav was picked up from the railway station around 1 am by the Special Task Force and local police, Additional Superintendent of Police Rajiv Malhotra said.

Yadav was produced in a court in Badaun which remanded him in judicial custody for 14 days.

While being taken to the court, he told media persons that he was innocent.

Malhotra said police were looking for the second accused Veerpal Yadav and expected to nab him soon.

Both the constables have been dismissed from service.

The 14-year-old girl was allegedly abducted and gang raped by the two constables at Musajhag Police Station on New Year eve.

Night duty in charge of the police station Himanshu Shukla and Head Constable Udayveer Singh have also been suspended, while Sub-Inspector Sobharan Singh Yadav has been taken off duty.

IG (Law and Order) A Satish Ganesh had told reporters that medical examination of the girl had confirmed the rape.

A financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh was given to family members of the victim from the CM fund.
