A massive blanket of fog settled over Delhi on Tuesday morning, severely disrupting air and rail traffic with 27 flights delayed and nearly 90 trains running late.

Cold weather conditions continued to prevail in the national capital with the minimum temperature being recorded at 4.5 degrees Celsius, three notches below normal.

27 flights were delayed mainly in international arrival and domestic departure due to fog.

According to a Northern Railway official, six trains have been cancelled. While 79 trains are running late due to the adverse weather conditions, departure timings of 10 others had to be rescheduled.

Rajdhani trains originating from Dibrugarh, Bhubaneshwar, Sealdah and Ranchi were among the trains running late.

Road traffic in the national capital was also severely affected on Tuesday morning due to fog.

"Driving becomes very difficult in this fog. The chances of accident are high because we can't see anything on the road. It is only when the indicators are blinking that we can see from a distance that a vehicle is there," said a resident of Delhi.

From Uttar Pradesh, 16 deaths have been reported due to intense cold and icy winds.

Jammu and Kashmir too continues to reel under intense cold conditions with the mercury in the state's summer capital Srinagar settling at minus 7 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

In Srinagar, frost made roads slippery, preventing motorists and two-wheel riders from venturing out, while surfaces of the city's famed lakes froze, causing hardship to fishermen and boatmen.

Kargil was the coldest place in the state on Monday, recording a low of minus 15.6 degrees Celsius.

Ludhiana in Punjab saw a cold and foggy morning on Tuesday with visibility dropping to less than 100 meters.

Even Amritsar and Patiala saw minimum temperatures reaching 4.1 and 3.4 degrees respectively.
