Having shot into the spotlight some years ago for announcing a bounty of Rs 51 crores on the head of a Danish cartoonist for drawing a blasphemous cartoon of Prophet Mohammad, Bahujan Samaj Party MLA Haji Yaqoob Quraishi once again made waves for displaying unusual extravagance at the wedding of his daughter in Meerut on Thursday.

Besides a high end Audi car, Quraishi gave away 51 motor-bikes and 51 refrigerators together with jewelry worth Rs 1 crore as dowry to the bridegroom's family.

"The bikes and refrigerators are meant for the close relatives of the bridegroom, who gets the Audi as his gift," Quraishi proudly told mediapersons.

Asked whether the lavish gesture was in conformity with the tenets of Islam, which denounces extravagance in weddings, the MLA shot back, "Islam does not bar expression of happiness; and what I have done is not dowry."

Quraishi runs a multi-crore meat processing unit in Meerut, from where he was also exporting meat to certain middle-east countries.

Earlier when he had declared reward for the Danish cartoonist, he was a minister in the Mulayam Sigh Yadav government. But no sooner than Mulayam was voted out, he switched loyalties to BSP chief Mayawati.
