Uttar Pradesh top cop Brij Lal has been named as the state's new director general of police.

The decision was taken by UP Chief Minister Mayawati around midnight, when the present incumbent R K Tiwari attained superannuation. Tiwari was appointed as the state police chief on September 1.

An officer of the 1977 batch of the elite Indian Police Service, Brij Lal will assume office on Saturday. He is currently posted as special director general of police (law and order). He has held many key positions during his distinguished career of 34 years.

Born in 1955, the officer was described as among the youngest state police chiefs that UP has seen over the decades. He was only 22 at the time of entry into the IPS and therefore has four more years to retire from service.

Widely known for his tough policing and daredevil acts, Brij Lal has been rated as a top cop, with more than 100 daylight encounters to his credit.
