The Delhi high court on Tuesday issued show cause notices to senior advocates R K Anand and I U Khan, charging them with contempt of court.

The court issued the notices after a sting operation by a television channel alleged a collusion between the prosecution and the defence in the high-profile BMW hit-and-run case.

"Prima facie, we are satisfied that the lawyers have willfully obstructed and interfered with the administration of justice," a bench comprising Justice Manmohan Sarin and Justice S K Mishra observed. The court has asked the lawyers to file their reply by September 24.

The court also issued notices to Anand's associate Bhagwan Sharma and alleged middleman Lovely.

"An attempt was made to influence the witnesses in the ongoing proceedings in trial court, so as to interfere with the administration of justice," the court said.

The court had taken suo motu cognisance of the sting operation, which showed Anand allegedly offering money to eyewitness Sunil Kulkarni to depose in favour of prime accused Sanjeev Nanda, grandson of retired Naval chief admiral S M Nanda, allegedly ran over six persons with his black BMW in 1999.
