Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday described as 'scandalous' Bharatiya Janata Party's contention that Pranab Mukherjee's resignation letter to the Indian Statistical Institute was forged, and said the UPA Presidential candidate must surely have taken note of this allegation levelled against him.
"It is a scandalous suggestion and I am sure Pranab Mukherjee, the candidate, has taken note of this scandalous statement," Chidambaram told reporters in reply to a question on BJP's charge against Mukherjee.
Though the returning officer of the presidential election had accepted that Mukherjee resigned from the post of chairman, ISI on June 20, the BJP was not convinced.
BJP leader Satpal Jain alleged that Mukherjee's letter and his signature was fabricated.
The party has hinted it may go to court on the issue.
Asked about BJP's plans, Chidambaram said, "No one can stop anyone from going to court."
With Mukherjee's papers being found in order, the numbers in the electoral college weigh heavily in his favour to be elected as the President of India.
Polling for the presidential election will be held on July 19 and the results declared on July 22. P A Sangma is the opposition backed candidate contesting against Mukherjee.
