Police on Thursday lodged a first information report against seven people for torturing a Muslim boy for eloping with a higher caste girl of the same community on St Valentine's Day in Bihar's Vaishali district.
The FIR was lodged with the Mahua police station in the district on the complaint of the boy's mother, Amna Khatun, against seven relatives of the girl, Nagma, for torturing Akbar.
The accused were absconding and their residence was being watched, the officer-in-charge of the Mahua police station, Amarnath Jha, said.
The district administration took action after reports of Akbar's misery were published in a section of the press.
On February 14, Akbar tried to hire a jeep for eloping with the girl. When this did not materialise, the two escaped to Abdulpur, an adjoining village, where Akbar had some relatives. He later returned home the same evening after leaving Nagma with his relatives.
The girl's family members on suspicion dragged Akbar out of his home and tied him to a tree before thrashing him with hockey sticks.
They also slashed his body with razor blades, pulled out nails, scarred his body with cigarette butts and rubbed salt into the wounds.
The boy was then taken to a place on the outskirts of the village, tied to a motorcycle and dragged for a long distance. Unable to withstand the torture, Akbar broke down and revealed everything.
