At a time when at a time Lalu Prasad Yadav is facing huge flak from his political opponents for stoking a controversy saying Hindus too eat beef, fellow Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Raghuvansh Prasad Singh on Saturday created another furore when he claimed, citing the Vedas, that 'rishis' and 'maharishis' used to consume beef.

"I don't understand the point of making it so much of a big deal. Vedik scriptures are evident of Hindu saints and sadhus eating beef in ancient times," he said.

The veteran RJD leader went on to say that the consumption of beef reduced with the rise of Buddhism and it was the latter that advocated against cow slaughter.

Condemning the remarks, Union Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Giriraj Singh said that the 'whole clan of RJD has gone mad.'

"I am very much hurt by hearing this statement of Raghuvansh Prasad. I think all this spoken as a well thought strategy made by Lalau Prasad Yadav and Nitish Kumar. Whatever he is speaking is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated," Singh said.

"I think Lalu and his party leaders are making these kinds of statements just for the sake of votes. I think the whole clan of RJD has gone mad," he added.

Just a few days ago, RJD chief Lalu Yadav had remarked that "Hindus too eat beef" , drawing much criticism from all quarters. In his defence, Lalu Yadav said that his remark was not aimed at the Hindus. The RJD chief added that 'beef' does not necessarily mean 'cow meat' but can be used for 'goat meat' as well.
