With 31 competitors out of a field of 271 – that's 11.439%- Indian Americans appear well poised to dominate yet another Scripps National Spelling Bee.

In the last six years, the Spelling Bee has been claimed by Indian Americans four times, most recently by Sai Gunturi in 2003.

The contest takes place on June 1 and 2, in Washington, DC.

Texas leads the pack, with seven Indian Americans. Four represent California, while Indiana, Massachusetts and Ohio each have three.

Nine-year-old Akshat Shekhar of Quincy, Massachusetts is one of the two youngest competitors.  Perennial favorite Samir Patel is competing in his third Spelling Bee, and he's just 11.
