One person was killed and 15 others were wounded on Monday evening in police firing and clashes that erupted in north Kashmir's Baramulla town as the body of a 13-year old student was fished out from the Jhelum river.

As the news about the recovery of the body of the 7th class student spread in the town, violent mobs took to streets and clashed with security forces.

The security forces opened fire at a strong violent mob that tried to torch the house of a special police officer, who the locals alleged was involved in the drowning of Faizan, killing a youth identified as 25-year old Fayaz Ahmad Khanday.

At least 15 other persons including three with gunshot wounds have been injured in Monday's violence, according to a senior police officer. Two seriously injured persons were evacuated to a hospital in summer capital Srinagar.

Clashes erupted in other parts of the town as a strong mob carrying the body of Faizan indulged in heavy stone pelting on the security forces who responded with teargas and baton charges.

The mobs on Monday evening also took to streets in other parts of the town burning tyres on the roads and hurling stones at police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force troopers.

"The situation is highly tense in the town and we are mulling imposition of curfew," said a senior police officer.

According to latest reports, the body of Faizan has now been taken for burial in the old Baramulla town while the body of Fayaz Ahmad Khanday has been handed over to his relatives for burial in his village.
