Hundreds of bar girls staged a sit-in at Azad Maidan on Tuesday, demanding alternative livelihood and rehabilitation for those affected by Maharashtra government's decision to ban dance bars in the state.

Bar Girls Union president Varsha Kale led the sit-in. The girls criticised the government and Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil for the decision to ban dance bars.

The union also demanded that the government resolution banning the bars be kept in abeyance for three months. "We are demanding that the girls be rehabilitated and a comprehensive package be offered to them," Kale said.
