Assam: 3 killed, 20 injured in blast

Three persons were killed and 20 others injured when an improvised explosive device planted by unidentified militants exploded at around 1120 hours at Srirampur crossing in Gossaingaon sub-division of Kokrajhar district in Western Assam bordering West Bengal.

Two persons died on the spot while one died on way to the hospital.

Those who died on the spot were identified as Abdul Mazid (22) and Ruplal Shah (18).

The death toll may go up given that condition of eight of the injured was stated to be serious.

to the spot and a manhunt was launched in the area. All entry and exit point to the border town have been sealed. Police is yet to ascertain the identity of militant group, if any, behind the blast.

The area is infested with militants from different groups, including the banned United Liberation Front of Assam and its close ally Kamatapur Liberation Organisation.

Bodo militant group the National Democratic Front of Bodoland used to have strong base in the area. However, the group is now in ceasefire with Government of India and engaged in a peace process.
