Normal life was affected in the minority-dominated areas of Assam by a statewide bandh called by the All Assam Minority Students Union to protest the scrapping of the Illegal Migrants Act by the Supreme Court.

The bandh has affected life in Dhubri, Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Nalbari, Barpeta, Nagaon and Sonitpur districts, official sources said.

Fourteen AAMSU picketers were arrested for trying to enforce the bandh in the Abhayapuri police station area in Bongaigaon district.

Schools and business establishments were closed in minority-dominated areas while only a few buses plied.

There was no impact of the bandh in Guwahati and various districts in upper Assam and Barak valley.

Several organisations, including the All Assam Tai Ahom Students Union, the Hindu Yuva Chatra Parished and the All Assam Motok Yuva Chatra Sanmilani have opposed today's day-long bandh.
