The Assam government on Wednesday constituted a one-man inquiry committee headed by the Additional Chief Secretary P P Verma to probe into the incident of mob assault on Rumi Nath, ruling Congress MLA of Borkhola LAC, in South Assam, on the night of June 29 last inside a hotel at Karimganj town. The committee will submit its report within 15 days.

The probe panel is expected to ascertain the facts and circumstances leading to the incident. It will also determine if there were any lapses on the part of any authority including violation of rules, and if so, it will fix the responsibility.

Along with any other matter related to this incident, the committee will also suggest measures to be taken to prevent recurrence of such incidents in future, according to an official communique issued in Guwahati on Wednesday evening.

Congress legislator Rumi Nath and her second husband Jackey Zakir were seriously injured when a mob stormed into a hotel room in Karimganj town in southern Assam. The couple had put up in the hotel for the night of June 29 after the MLA had called on the flood-hit in her constituency.

Police already arrested eight persons in connection with attack on the woman.
