American humourist Art Buchwald died late on Wednesday at his home in Washington of renal failure, his son Joel said on Thursday.

"He died peacefully in his sleep," Joel added.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist, who began his career as a Paris stringer for the US showbusiness publication Variety, had a leg removed due to complications from diabetes in January 2006.

He entered a Washington hospital the next month, refusing to continue dialysis treatment for his failing kidneys effectively signing his own death warrant.

However, although he slid slowly toward death, Buchwald continued to provide regular newspaper articles of biting humour that in 1982 earned him a Pulitzer Prize, the top prize in US journalism, for outstanding commentary.
